1. Preliminary Preparation and Image Processing
The preparatory work prior to formal printing directly determines the yield rate of the final product. This step requires first clarifying the substrate’s material, dimensions, and printing precision requirements, followed by preparing the corresponding essential tools: polyester or nylon screens with the appropriate mesh count, aluminum or wooden screen frames, photosensitive emulsion, sizing machines, inkjet milky or transparent film, screen-printed squeegees, specialized screen-print inks compatible with the substrate, UV exposure units, and high-pressure rinsing equipment.
If the design is created on a computer, the file must be converted to vector format to prevent blurred edges when scaled up. Since serigraphy screen printing is based on single-color registration, multi-color designs must be separated into individual layers by color, with each layer retaining only the content corresponding to that specific color. Additionally, registration lines must be added at the same position across all layers; these lines ensure precise alignment of different colors during subsequent plate-making and printing. Once the separation is complete, the design on each layer is printed onto photographic inkjet film in solid black, opaque form. 2. Screen Print Screen Making

Pour the photosensitive emulsion into the coating bottle. Flip the screen over and repeat the same process on the other side. Finally, use a squeegee to remove any excess emulsion. Lay the screen flat in the darkroom to air-dry completely, ensuring the emulsion thickness remains uniform.
Once the emulsion is completely dry, place the printed film tightly against the side of the screen that will contact the substrate, ensuring the black side of the image is in contact with the screen surface. Secure it firmly with a transparent glass plate or tape to prevent shifting. Place the secured screen under a UV exposure unit. Adjust the exposure time according to the lamp’s wattage; under standard conditions, 6 to 8 minutes is sufficient to allow the photosensitive emulsion in the exposed areas to cure. After exposure, first dampen both sides of the screen and let it sit for 1 minute to allow the unexposed emulsion to dissolve completely. Then, use a high-pressure water gun to rinse the screen surface evenly. The emulsion in the areas corresponding to the black pattern on the film will be completely washed away, forming transparent mesh openings for the design. Finally, lay the screen flat to air-dry. Check whether the mesh openings in the design areas are transparent and whether the non-design areas are completely sealed by the emulsion. If there are any small leaks, repair them with screen sealing adhesive.
3. Color Correction and Printing
Before formal printing, the ink must be formulated according to the type of substrate. Water-based inks should be used for fabric substrates, while solvent-based or UV inks should be used for hard substrates such as plastic and metal. When formulating the ink, control the viscosity according to the instructions and add an appropriate amount of thinner to adjust the flow, thereby preventing sagging or screen clogging after printing. Secure the dried screen to the positioning frame on the printing table. Lay the substrate flat in the corresponding position on the printing table, aligning it with the previously marked registration lines, and ensure a uniform, slight gap between the screen and the substrate.
Pour the prepared ink onto the image area of the screen. Hold the squeegee with both hands, maintaining an appropriate angle of inclination and even pressure, and move it at a constant speed across the screen from one end to the other. As you move the squeegee, the ink will pass through the open mesh and transfer to the surface of the substrate below. After completing a single pass, lift the screen and check whether the design on the substrate is complete and uniform. If there are areas with missing ink or blurred lines, adjust the pressure on the squeegee and reprint once. For multicolor registration printing, after printing each color, allow the ink on the substrate to cure and dry completely before replacing the screen with the corresponding color. Align the screen using the registration lines before printing the next color to prevent different colors of ink from smudging onto each other.
4. Post-Processing and Screen Recycling
After printing is complete, the substrate must be dried using a method appropriate for the type of ink. Water-based textile inks can be air-dried or dried with hot air, while UV inks require curing under ultraviolet light. Solvent-based inks must be left to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area to ensure the ink layer adheres completely to the substrate’s surface, preventing color fading or peeling during subsequent use.
After printing, promptly clean any residual ink from the screen by repeatedly rinsing the screen surface with the appropriate cleaning agent to completely remove the remaining ink. Next, use a film remover to wash off the photosensitive emulsion from the screen. After rinsing and air-drying, the screen can be recoated with photosensitive emulsion and reused for the next printing run, significantly reducing material costs.
Once the entire process is complete, beginners can gradually experiment with adjusting different mesh counts, ink thicknesses, and squeegee pressure.
