Screen printing mesh is a vital component in the screen printing process. It is a woven fabric that is stretched over a frame and used to transfer ink onto a substrate. The mesh count, or the number of threads per inch, determines the level of detail that can be produced in the print. The higher the mesh count, the finer the details. The type of mesh, whether polyester, nylon or stainless steel, also impacts the printing process.
Polyester mesh is the most commonly used type of mesh due to its versatility, while nylon is preferred for printing on rough surfaces and stainless steel for high-volume production. It is important to choose the right type of mesh for your project and to properly care for it to ensure longevity. Screen printing mesh comes in different threoosinads-per-inch (TPI) or mesh counts. This means if you have a 110 screen printing mesh count then it means that there are 110 threads placed vertically and 110 threads in horizontal position per square inch. The spaces between the mesh threads are the open areas where the ink goes through and onto the fabrics. To put this in perspective, the open areas are larger on lower mesh counts (or TPI) while the openings are finer when the TPI is higher.

If you plan to have a high-detailed image for screen printing then you should use a mesh with higher TPI. This way, the fine lines or image dots will be correctly represented. Most of the time, thinner inks are being used in this process. Having a larger opening will not work since the ink will just blot and spread throughout the fabric thereby defeating the purpose.
