Application Case of Screen Printing Mesh and Frame in Printing
Application Case of Screen Printing Mesh and Frame in Printing
This case focuses on the gift box printing project of a traditional Chinese style cultural and creative company, concentrating on the selection, adaptation and practical application of screen printing mesh and frame. It elaborates on the collaborative role of the two in high-precision printing, solves the core problems such as blurred patterns, rough edges and inaccurate overprinting during the printing process, and finally achieves the accurate implementation of the design concept, while controlling production costs and improving production efficiency.
I. Case Background and Printing Requirements
Our cooperator company focusing on traditional Chinese style cultural and creative products plans to launch a high-end traditional Chinese style gift box for the holiday gift market. The main body of the gift box is made of special cardboard, and the surface needs to be printed with delicate landscape patterns and small calligraphic fonts. The core requirements are as follows: 1. The minimum line width of the pattern is only 0.1mm, requiring clear printing, smooth edges, no burrs or smudges;
2. The printed pattern needs to be accurately aligned with the subsequent hot stamping process, and the alignment error must be controlled within 0.05mm; 3. 2000 gift boxes are mass-produced, which requires ensuring printing consistency and avoiding batch scrapping;
4. The surface of the gift box has a matte texture, and the printing ink must be firmly attached without falling off or scratching.
In the early stage, the enterprise entrusted a small workshop to make the screen version. Due to the unreasonable matching of screen printing mesh and frame, the printed gift boxes had problems such as rough edges of patterns, blurred details and incomplete fonts. The first batch of more than 200 gift boxes were all scrapped, which not only caused cost losses, but also delayed the product launch cycle. To solve the above problems, the enterprise reselected partners and finally chose a printing factory with professional screen version production capabilities. The core optimization direction is the scientific selection and adaptation of screen printing mesh and frame.

II. Selection Basis and Scheme of Screen Printing Mesh and Frame
Combined with the high-precision requirements of gift box printing, the characteristics of substrates and mass production requirements, the technical team carried out selection around the material and mesh count of mesh, and the material and structure of frame, and finally determined the following scheme to ensure that the two play a synergistic role to meet the requirements of printing precision and efficiency.
(I) Selection of Screen Printing Mesh
As the core carrier for ink transfer, the material and mesh count of the screen directly determine the clarity of the pattern and the ink coverage. Combined with the printing requirements of this project, the key points of selection are as follows:
1. Material Selection: Polyester mesh is selected. Compared with nylon mesh, polyester mesh has stronger tension stability, moderate solvent resistance and moderate price, which is suitable for high-precision printing of flat substrates such as special cardboard; at the same time, polyester mesh has moderate elasticity, which can effectively avoid mesh deformation caused by excessive scraper pressure, ensure the consistency of mass printing, and meet the mass production needs of 2000 gift boxes. Compared with stainless steel mesh, polyester mesh is lighter, and can reduce the overall weight when matched with aluminum alloy frame, which is convenient for printing operation, and has more advantages in cost, without bearing the high cost investment of stainless steel mesh.
2. Mesh Count Selection: 120-mesh polyester mesh is selected. Mesh count refers to the number of mesh holes per square inch. The higher the mesh count, the finer the mesh holes, the lower the ink passing rate, which is suitable for fine patterns; the lower the mesh count, the coarser the mesh holes, the higher the ink coverage, which is suitable for large-format and thick-line patterns. The landscape patterns printed this time have delicate lines (minimum 0.1mm) and include small calligraphic fonts, which need to balance the clarity of details and ink adhesion. 120 mesh is a medium-high mesh count, which can not only accurately control the ink dosage to avoid smudging caused by excessive ink, but also ensure the complete presentation of pattern details. At the same time, it is suitable for the ink absorption characteristics of special cardboard to ensure firm ink adhesion.
3.Auxiliary Treatment: The surface of the screen is degreased and tension-calibrated. Degreasing treatment can remove oil stains and impurities on the screen surface, avoid uneven coating of photosensitive adhesive, ensure close combination of photosensitive adhesive and screen, and reduce ink leakage; after tension calibration, the screen tension is controlled at 8-12N/cm to ensure that the screen is flat without slack or wrinkles, laying a foundation for subsequent precise printing.
(II) Selection of Frame
As the supporting carrier of the screen, the material, structure and size of the frame directly affect the stability of the screen tension, and then affect the printing precision. The key points of selection are as follows:
1. Material Selection: Aluminum alloy frame is selected. Aluminum alloy frame has the advantages of light weight, high strength, not easy to deform and reusable. Compared with wooden frame, it has stronger moisture-proof and anti-deformation ability, can maintain structural stability for a long time, avoid uneven screen tension caused by frame deformation, and thus prevent printed pattern deformation; compared with plastic frame, aluminum alloy frame has stronger bearing capacity, can stably support 120-mesh polyester screen, and is wear-resistant, suitable for repeated use in mass printing, which can reduce the cost of frame replacement.
2. Structure and Size Design: The frame size is customized according to the printing area of the gift box (30cm×40cm), the frame thickness is 2cm, and the internal 60° cross reinforcement structure is designed to enhance the anti-deformation ability of the frame, ensure that the frame is evenly stressed during stretching and printing, without shaking or deformation. At the same time, the surface of the frame is anodized to enhance surface smoothness, facilitate the fixation of the screen and the subsequent cleaning of the screen version, and extend the service life of the frame.
3. Adaptation to Screen Stretching Process: Automatic screen stretching machine is used for screen stretching, fixing the polyester screen on the aluminum alloy frame, accurately controlling the screen stretching pressure and tension, ensuring that the screen tension error is within ±0.5N/cm, making the screen closely fit with the frame without slack or wrinkles, and avoiding pattern deformation and inaccurate overprinting caused by uneven screen tension during printing.
III. Printing Operation Process and Effect Control
After determining the selection scheme of screen printing mesh and frame, combined with processes such as photosensitive adhesive coating and exposure and development, the gift box printing operation was carried out, focusing on the collaborative role of the two throughout the process to ensure that the printing effect meets the requirements.
(I) Preliminary Preparation: Screen Version Production and Debugging
1. Screen Stretching Operation: The 120-mesh polyester screen with calibrated tension is fixed on the aluminum alloy frame by an automatic screen stretching machine, and the screen stretching pressure is controlled within a uniform range to ensure consistent screen tension. After screen stretching, it is left to stand for 24 hours to make the screen fully fit with the frame, avoiding tension relaxation during subsequent printing.
2. Photosensitive Adhesive Coating: High-adhesion oil-based photosensitive adhesive is selected and evenly coated on the stretched screen, with 2 layers of coating, and the thickness of each layer is controlled at 0.02mm to ensure uniform coating without bubbles or missing coating. After coating, it is put into a constant temperature drying oven to dry, forming a uniform photosensitive adhesive film, and the screen is in an "invisible template" state at this time.
3.Exposure and Development: The film with landscape patterns and calligraphic fonts is accurately covered on the screen coated with photosensitive adhesive, and put into a high-precision ultraviolet exposure machine to accurately control the exposure time, avoiding blurred patterns caused by insufficient exposure or loss of details caused by excessive exposure. After exposure, the screen version is rinsed with clean water to dissolve the uncured photosensitive adhesive, so that the pattern on the film forms hollow mesh holes on the screen, completing the screen version production.
4. Screen Version Debugging: The produced screen version is installed on the printing machine, the distance between the frame and the substrate (special cardboard) is adjusted to ensure uniform distance (controlled at 1-2mm), and the screen tension and whether the frame is deformed are checked at the same time. The scraper pressure is debugged to ensure that the ink can evenly pass through the screen mesh holes and transfer to the substrate surface.
(II) Mass Printing: Practical Embodiment of Collaborative Role
1. Ink Adaptation: Oil-based ink suitable for polyester screen and special cardboard is selected, and the ink viscosity is adjusted to an appropriate level to ensure that the ink can smoothly pass through the mesh holes of the 120-mesh screen, and avoid smudging caused by excessive ink.
2.Printing Operation: Start the printing machine, the scraper slides across the screen surface at a constant speed, and under the action of pressure, the ink passes through the hollow mesh holes of the screen and is accurately transferred to the gift box surface. In this process, the stable structure of the aluminum alloy frame ensures uniform screen tension, avoiding pattern offset caused by frame shaking or deformation; the fine mesh holes of the 120-mesh polyester screen accurately control the ink dosage and transfer, ensuring that the fine lines of the landscape patterns are clear and smooth, and the calligraphic fonts are free of defects and burrs.
3. Process Control: Every 100 gift boxes printed, the state of the screen version is checked, focusing on whether the screen is slack, the frame is deformed, and the screen mesh holes are blocked. Clean and adjust in time to ensure the consistency of mass printing. At the same time, check the alignment between the printed pattern and the hot stamping position to ensure that the alignment error is controlled within 0.05mm.
(III) Printing Effect and Achievements
Through the scientific selection of screen printing mesh and frame and the optimization of the operation process, the gift box printing achieved ideal results this time: 1. Pattern precision meets the standard: the edges of the landscape patterns are smooth, the fine lines (0.1mm) are clear and complete, the calligraphic fonts are neat, without burrs, smudges or defects; 2. Accurate overprinting: the alignment error between the printed pattern and the hot stamping process is controlled within 0.05mm, meeting the quality requirements of high-end gift boxes; 3. Good batch consistency: all 2000 gift boxes are qualified, no batch scrapping, and the qualification rate reaches 100%; 4. Adhesion meets the standard: the printing ink is firmly attached, and there is no falling off or ink loss after friction and scratch tests, which is in line with the use requirements of the gift box.
In addition, the selected aluminum alloy frame can be reused, and can be used for the printing of other subsequent gift boxes after replacing the screen, reducing the cost of screen version production; the 120-mesh polyester screen has high cost performance, balancing precision and cost, and the mass printing efficiency is improved by 30%, effectively shortening the product launch cycle. The cultural and creative enterprise subsequently signed a long-term cooperation agreement with the printing factory, applying this set of selection and adaptation schemes of screen printing mesh and frame to all subsequent high-end gift box printing projects.

IV. Case Summary and Experience Enlightenment
This case fully shows that screen printing mesh and frame are the core components of screen printing. Their selection and adaptation directly determine the printing precision, batch consistency and production cost, and the exertion of their collaborative role is the key to achieving high-quality printing.
The core experience enlightenment is as follows:
1. Selection should be in line with printing requirements: the mesh count of screen printing mesh should be determined according to pattern precision and substrate material, and the material should balance tension stability and cost; the material of frame should first choose the type with high strength and not easy to deform, and the structural design should be suitable for screen stretching and printing requirements to ensure uniform tension;
2. Synergy between the two is the key: the tension calibration and screen stretching process of the screen should be adapted to the structure and material of the frame, avoiding uneven screen tension caused by frame deformation, which affects the printing effect;
3. Process control cannot be ignored: in mass printing, it is necessary to regularly check the state of the screen and frame, clean and adjust in time to ensure that both are in the best working state, avoiding batch scrapping caused by minor deviations.
